Get ready for an electrifying night at the Kalamazoo State Theatre, as we proudly present the legendary indie rock sensation, The Mountain Goats, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, with special guest Katy Kirby. Prepare to be swept away by the vibrant energy and unique sound that have catapulted The Mountain Goats to the forefront of the indie music scene.

Experience The Magic of The Mountain Goats:

For decades, The Mountain Goats have enchanted the music world with their distinct blend of narrative songwriting and evocative melodies. At the helm is John Darnielle, a visionary artist whose lyrical prowess has garnered a passionate and devoted fanbase. The band’s ability to tell stories through music has set them apart in the indie rock genre, earning them not just fans but avid followers.

Their latest album, “Jenny from Thebes,” is a testament to their evolving artistry. This narrative-rich album offers a deep dive into themes of individuality, societal norms, and the quest for resilience. With its lush soundscapes and poignant lyrics, the album marks a significant chapter in The Mountain Goats’ ongoing musical journey.

About Katy Kirby:

Katy Kirby’s second album “Blue Raspberry,” a New York-based songwriter’s exploration into the artifice of intimacy, delves into her first queer relationship, tracing the dynamics of new love through a mix of rock candy sweetness and the sharpness of broken glass. Born in Spicewood, Texas, and based in Nashville, Kirby began writing the album with its title track, exploring the concept of yearning in country love songs and the artificiality in expressions of love. Following her acclaimed debut “Cool Dry Place,” “Blue Raspberry” represents a polished and confident sophomore effort, probing the complexities of human connection and the blurry line between real and fake. Kirby’s songwriting process, often conducted in her van while touring with Waxahatchee in 2021, embraced ornate musical arrangements and rich, elaborate lyrics. The album, featuring lush sonic elements arranged by Rowen Merrill and produced by Alberto Sewald and Logan Chung, draws inspiration from albums like Andy Shauf’s “The Party” and Lomelda’s “Hannah.” It includes tracks like the gentle ballad “Salt Crystal” and the heartbroken “Alexandria,” showcasing Kirby’s ability to turn mundane elements into magic, encapsulated in the haunting refrain, “Why wouldn’t that be enough?” This question echoes throughout the album, underscoring the pursuit of love and the acceptance of its imperfect, often artificial nature.
